Who is Erzulie?

The Goddess of Love! She is the most beloved Voodoo Spirit (or Lwa - pronounced Loa) in the Voudoo Pantheon and to whom Erzulie’s is dedicated. The female Lwa of love, Erzulie is powerful in fulfilling desires such as sexuality, passion, pleasure and prosperity.

Described as one of the most beautiful Spirits, she is notoriously vain, a touch lazy, has multiple lovers and prefers to receive lavish gifts (perfumes, sweet cakes, jewellery and flowers) for her help with your requests. She is the Lwa that can make most things possible where Love and Success are concerned; without her help, little can be accomplished. Like with many Lwa, Erzulie has a darker side. She can be a bit of a drama queen and enjoys encouraging fantasies; even if some are not realistic! In such cases, she can become very sad, emotional and bitterly disappointed; you may feel that way too when working with her. Other characteristics include jealousy and anger, especially if ignored by someone when she is demanding their attention, this is why you must always stay in her good graces and please her should you seek her assistance!
 

History

Due to the history of Voodoo in America, the original practitioners were slaves and had to disguise their Spirits as members of the Catholic Church in order to worship them. Consequently, the Virgin Mary is the Catholic counterpart to Erzulie, to whom she was most similar; not in terms of the virginal or immaculate conception beliefs of course, but because of her unconditional love, empathy, compassion and willingness to help, especially with love issues and relationships.

 

The Founder

Erzulie’s (the brand) is the creation of one incredible lady that gave up her 10-year strong career in Broadcast Media to open a spiritual shop in New Orleans… meet The Root Queen!

The Root Queen’s interest in all things spiritual was sparked by her Catholic upbringing; an interest fuelled by worldwide travels incurred during her career in advertising. She was exposed to numerous ancient spiritual traditions, which she personally experienced in North America, South America and the Caribbean, to name but a few. It was during the low points of her life she was encouraged to study the ancient practice of Voodoo, describing it as “all one; all connected; all spirituality; universal wisdom”. There is belief that Voodoo is the world's oldest religion and that all paths are born from this belief system.

She received requests from several of her friends to help them with certain situations, using her knowledge of Voodoo. She made them specialty oils and herbs, performed formulary and ritual work and, most importantly, listened to their problems and offered some thoughts or philosophies. As a result, one of these friends asked her to create a bespoke line of products for their spiritual store in Orlando, Florida - ergo, the birth of Erzulie's!

Initially the intent was to help when and where needed; she already had a full-blown career. Such was the demand for her products and services, her life vocation was called into question. In December 2002, The Root Queen left her well-established 10-year old advertising agency and moved to New Orleans to open the first Erzulie’s Authentic Voudou shop.

 

The Concept

Erzulie's was founded with one vision: to introduce the world to the Lwa - the divine forces behind Voodoo; using the finest, handcrafted spiritual items available. The Root Queen’s aim is to help people understand that Voodoo is a beautiful religion with amazing spirits available to step in and help anyone, at anytime; to help people find the balance needed for this busy, disconnected, imbalanced modern world and to connect back to the ancient paths and spirits for comfort, relief, understanding and balance - in a format they can relate to and incorporate into their lives.

Erzulie's Authentic Voudou is a collaborative effort on the part of so many amazing and devout practitioners, spiritualist, healers and "magicians". It is a mystical journey for everyone involved, one without any end, a constant cycle of growth and evolution.
